Wildlife Shoulder Alignment – THEYOGIMATT

TRANSITION FROM THE SOIL TO THE WILD THING

As you get up from the floor, you will notice that you are tempted to undo your shoulder alignment. I suggest you film yourself so that you can observe with your eyes, as it can be easy to feel like you are doing one thing while your body is doing another. Take a look back at the video above and you will see that as I get up I am deliberately turning my arm bone outwards and moving my shoulder blade backwards.

KEY POINT: THE SHOULDER IS NOT STACKED OVER THE WRIST

Notice that as I get up I continue to move my weight towards my legs and using the force of my legs, buttocks and back to press my body towards the sky. This is to eliminate stress on the shoulder and minimize the risk of shoulder injuries. Using your legs and back muscles will also help you deepen your posture.

For more information on anatomy, biomechanics, and techniques, you can apply to advance your asana practice by joining the Anatomy in Motion dive. This dive is unique in that each class begins with a visual anatomy tutorial that helps you see how your muscles create movement. Following the tutorial you will learn to implement this knowledge in your practice and, most importantly, learn to FEEL your anatomy.
