Find the balance with online yoga teacher training

Just over a year ago I spontaneously enrolled in my 200HR online yoga teacher training with Power Living in 2020. Ironically, as I was writing this, Sydney and much of Australia have paused with a another blockage that forces us to sit still, in the same way we felt then.

Investing in teacher training was certainly not the most sensible thing for me. He was not working and had no indication of when that circumstance would change, and his savings were dwindling rapidly. Plus, I didn’t even want to be a yoga teacher!

But when Power Living’s 200HR online yoga teacher training appeared in my feed, I was very attracted. Maybe my brain hadn’t been on board, but my heart was pounding in the best way. I quickly realized how much I loved yoga and how it would be the ideal practice to land on during that time of unpredictability.

I’m currently reading Lorin Roche’s Radiation Sutra and describing them aha moments, often lived in meditation, as transmission or electrical realization. “You often remember something you already know and love. You recognize a truth and your life force awakens.” Page 177.

As a Power Living student, I already knew how much my classes had raised my yoga practice and my mental health, so trusting in that good feeling, I signed up.

Studying online, especially for a practice that requires so much incarnation, may not appeal to everyone, but I am grateful for the flexibility it gave me. I was able to devote more time to online lectures that I found more difficult to digest and review the ones I enjoyed the most. It gave me time to sit down with ideas that would otherwise have been lost if I had heard them once in a traditional seminar. I don’t want to admit how many times I’ve had to pause and rewind to anatomy lessons. Tan. Lots of. Muscles!

The physical benefits are undeniable. I learned to put myself on a shoulder support safely, the triangle is much harder now that I’m doing it right and I can get some upfront time in investments. The postures I’ve been doing for a decade are feeling completely new again. This virtual workout was able to give me the tools to physically elevate my yoga practice in very tangible ways.

I think it’s safe to say that most 200HR graduates find out there are so much more to discover about this 5000-year-old tradition than they previously realized. The more you study, the more depth and beauty you will discover.

Through well-coordinated lectures, zoom sessions, and hours spent learning about this amazing tradition, I found more freedom. And feel freedom during a time when the world was literally trapped in its place, that was yoga doing its magic.

Halfway through my online training, I had another moment: not knowing exactly what it would be like, I felt a ray of clarity: “I want to work in this industry.” Through a happy series of fortuitous events, I ended up working for Power Living! I am now the manager of Bondi Studio. I spend my days in a studio, talking yoga to students. And who knows, maybe I’ll end up becoming a yoga teacher after all.

A year later, when I think about it, I am very grateful to have heard that spontaneous aha moment, that electric transmission of yes – that!

As Troy quotes at one of the yoga philosophy lectures, “Often a person finds his destiny by the path he took to avoid it.” Jean de La Fontaine
