Outline of Our San Diego Yoga Teacher Training Curriculum

Breath

BreathIf you’re not breathing, then you’re not doing yoga! This is one of our mottos of the Buddhi Yoga TT. Learn the fundamentals of breath, including the anatomy of the diaphragm and the influence of breathing on our health. It is in the breath where yoga has the power to heal. This can be proven when we study how the breath effects the nervous system. As yoga teachers, our scope of practice is not to diagnose or cure people. We facilitate a space where people can use their breath as a way to heal themselves. From the very beginning of the training, you will be teaching yourself and others how to breathe. It is a very simple yet powerful tool for yoga teachers to share with others.

Postures

Mary PereiraOur 200 hour San Diego Yoga Teacher Training is a posture-based training in the vinyasa style. Yoga postures create balanced strength and flexibility in the body. Break down a variety of different poses from all 5 of the classic posture categories. Once you learn a few from each, you will be able to apply what you learned to every single pose you ever teach or do. After going over a specific pose, break up into smaller groups to practice all the details we present. It is helpful to see all your classmates in the poses so you learn quickly that it’s not a one size fits all approach.

Anatomy

Screen Shot 2019 11 03 at 2.45.22 PMWhen you are directing people through movement, you want to have at least a basic understanding of anatomy. Many yoga teacher trainings will take two full days to bombard you with anatomy lectures. For most new trainees, this is boring and difficult to retain.

The Buddhi Yoga Teacher Training weaves the anatomy lessons all throughout the training. You will have several 1-2 hour lectures so that you progressively learn more about the body from the very beginning to the very end of the program. Each new lesson builds upon the last. For example, learn about the bones before you learn about the joints. Each lecture will be applied in other areas of the training such as pose breakdowns and practice teaching. So you don’t just listen to Amanda talk about anatomy, you will have to use what you learned right away in different class scenarios. You will hear it, feel it and teach it so that you retain the information and have a firm grasp of basic anatomy.

Subtle Anatomy

Chakra WorkshopSubtle anatomy is also referred to as energetic anatomy. While western science does not teach about the energetic system of the body, many eastern philosophies do. Most Asian medical systems acknowledge this aspect of humanity and it is an important aspect of yoga. The yogic system of energetic anatomy includes the nadis (energy channels) and the chakras (energy siphers that move from the base of the spine to the crown of the head).

We will also introduce the koshas, or the five layers of our being, This system goes into more than just these ideas. We will give you tips on how to weave these ideas into your teaching as well as your own practice. If this part of the training really peaks your interest, we can guide you with books, teachers and other trainings for you to pursue to learn more.

Philosophy

Yoga philosophy could be its very own 200 hour teacher training. There is so much to cover when it comes to this topic, you could spend lifetimes digging into all the different realms. In our San Diego Yoga Teacher Training, we focus on the 8 Limbs of Yoga from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. This is what many consider to be the “bible” of yoga. These 8 limbs are essentially the building blocks of a well-rounded yoga practice. It shows that yoga is much more than postures and is a code of conduct for both the self and how we treat those around us. The 8 limbs are a path leading to a non-dual experience of the universe. This is where all is one and we realize our natural state is that of calm, peace and bliss.

History of Yoga

The history of yoga dates back thousands of years to the Indus Valley and is too much to cover in a 200 hour training. We focus on yoga’s most recent history to the early 1900’s. Many consider a man named Krishnamacharya to be the father of modern yoga. His journey of teaching and the lineage he passed down through his students greatly influenced how we practice yoga today. We feel it is very important for our trainees to learn about Krishnamarcharya and how he jump-started the posture-based yoga that you will be teaching after our program.

Role of a Teacher

San Diego Yoga Teacher TrainingThis training will prepare you to lead a room full of students with confidence. There are many different factors at play when teaching. We must abide by certain standards, ethics and understanding to successfully and safely lead yoga classes. Participate in several exercises throughout the training to teach you more about yourself, your voice, and your presence. These exercises will help you to develop the confidence and grace that are so important when becoming any kind of teacher, especially of yoga.
